K-12 Classroom Highlight - Eisenberg Elementary

downes_es_web.jpgMr. Gavin’s third-grade class at Eisenberg Elementary school in New Castle, Delaware celebrated Social Studies day by undertaking a “Journey Around Eisenberg” on May 21, 2009. Mr. Gavin prepared a wonderful economics lesson utilizing locations around the school near local businesses. This lesson plan included the use of hand-held Global Positioning System (GPS) devices to collect the coordinates of their stops. All of the third-grade classrooms used their “passports” to journey around the school grounds learning about producers, products, consumers and advertising. In addition, the Delaware Geographic Alliance’s own Maggie Legates showed the students how Latitude and Longitude work as a grid system with a fun game. The Delaware GeoEducation group would like to applaud the efforts at Eisenberg Elementary for incorporating the use of GPS technology into this fun lesson!
