Maps Tell the Story: The Adventure in Your Community

This contest will provide students with an opportunity to study and map an Adventure in Your Community. The term“Community” can be interpreted broadly to fit your existing curriculum. A few examples are: neighborhood, town or city, county, state, region, country, continent, the world or any other geographic area. The term “Adventure” can be interpreted to mean a personal experience or an historical event.

2010 Delaware GIS Conference K-12 Contest Winners Announced by DGDC, written by Mike Mahaffie.

Two different groups of students from Milton Elementary School won first place honors in the K-12 Student Contest, Maps Tell the Story: Plan for the Future, run as part of the 2010 Delaware GIS Conference.

The K-12 contest, sponsored by the GeoEducation in Delaware subcommittee of the Delaware Geographic Data Committee, by CABE Associates, and by Tidewater Utilities, invited Delaware students to investigate how maps can help plan for the future. Contest entries could be posters, multimedia entries, or digital map data. The GeoEducation subcommittee selected finalists to be displayed and voted on by, attendees at the GIS conference on March 30.


Poster Category

First Place: Historic Milton Tour
Students: Brendon Garber, Brandon Ware, Jason Williams (Milton Elementary)
Teacher: Wendy Harrington

Second Place: Delaware’s National Park
Students: Ryan Sipple, Jordan Springer, Nick Louder, Sammy Price, Landon Jones and Alex Pantozzi (Lake Forest Elementary)

Multi-Media Category

First Place: Podcast - Historic Milton Tour
Students: Claire Denney, A’liya Oglesby, Anthony Moore, Logan Ritenhour (Milton Elementary)

Second Place: Website – Environmental Planning: Digging into the problem of Soil Erosion & Sediment Control
Students: Mad Brad Science Group (Reid Temple Christian Academy)

Third Place: Movie – CARS~Ready, Set, Rescue!
Students: Christie Little, Alex Hobbs, Rachel Harrell, and Sophia Emery (Lake Forest Elementary)

Honorable Mention: PowerPoint – Historic Milton Tour

All Finalists received a Certificate of Achievement. The teachers of first place entries received a complimentary registration to next year’s Delaware GIS Conference.
